On Saturday, January 19th, Corona del Mar’s Science Olympiad team competed in their second invitational competition this year. Science Olympiad is an American competition in which students from various high schools and middle schools can compete in different events. All events are science-related topics. There are 23 events total, some of which include herpetology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, etc… A little over 7,800 middle and high school teams compete every year.

The first invitational Corona del Mar’s team participated in was at Ladera Vista Middle School in Fullerton and Cerritos High School in Cerritos. CdM placed 4th in the Circuit Lab event and 4th in the Write it, Do it event.
Saturday morning, the students on the team woke up bright and early in the morning to meet at school at 6:00 AM. The supervisor, Heather Kroeger, who is also the Honors Biology and AP Chemistry teacher at CdM, rented a bus to take the team to the location of the second invitational, Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights.
Once they arrived, the team set up the tent and the tables for all of their materials. In order to cover all of the events, each team member had to participate in two to five competitions. Certain tests included just a written tests while others required lab experiments or materials built before.

Throughout the entire experience, moral remained pretty high in the group. Max Wang, a freshman in his first year of Science Olympiad, recalled his experience, “I didn’t get to go to the first invitational but I was surprised at how fun this one was. I thought the tests would be stressful but the experiments make the whole experience really enjoyable. I’m excited for the regional competition in February.”
Congratulations to the CdM students that participated in Science Olympiad!
