The Netflix series, Black Mirror, explores the techno-paranoia that faces modern society. Each episode consists of a new cast with its own unique characters and taps into the different aspects of unease that settles in society.
Ever since releasing season four in December of last year, fans have eagerly been waiting for a season five. However, rather than another season of episodes, the new awaited release with be a Netflix film.Streamed from a since-deleted tweet, the title ‘Bandersnatch’ has been an uprising familiarity in the Netflix show, Black Mirror’s fan base.
While many Black Mirror episodes tend to be about an hour long, Bandersnatch is said to only be one minute longer than season three’s ‘Hated in the Nation,’ which leaves the film at a length of an hour and thirty minutes.
The Netflix standalone movie is said to be released before the year ends on December 28. However a trailer has yet to be released leaving viewers with little information on the upcoming debut and the meaning behind what a ‘Bandersnatch’ is.
The name is first seen in 1872 by Lewis Carroll in his novel, Through the Looking-Glass. In the movie, a Bandersnatch is a mythical bloodthirsty and ferocious creature. However considering the internet has established that the film will be based in the 80’s, it is less likely the film is focusing on Carroll’s fantasy monster.
The title is most likely referring to a never released video game. The description for ‘Bandersnatch’ is a three word phrase: “Be right back.” This phrase was the title of a season three episode about a technological service that created artificial forms of past relationships with the deceased. In addition, Bandersnatch is a video game and season three’s ‘Playtest,’ was based on a terrifying VR video game.

Despite what the meaning behind,’Bandersnatch’ is, the show will continue to delve deeper into the technological isolation that plagues this generation.
