On Sunday, December 9th, the CdM sailing team attended the third race in the SoCal regatta series. This race was the first travel regatta for many of the CdM sailors. The first two races were were at the Newport Harbor. However, SoCal #3 took place in front of the Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) in San Diego. On the Friday before, team members gathered at the Newport Sea Base, which is where they practice, to take the masts off all the boats and load the two separate trailers. Once this was finished, parents volunteers were able to hook up the trailers to their cars and drive them off to San Diego.

Before the regatta began at 10:00 in the morning, sailors attending woke up bright and early in the morning to drive all the way to MBYC to unload the boats and rig them up. Once the team performed their traditional countdown, they joined the other school teams on the water.

CdM entered a total of six boats into the race, all gold fleet. The main course used throughout the day was a standard windward-leeward, two laps. In the early morning, the wind was light and steady. However, as the day progressed, the breeze started to pick up and the temperature dropped.

Sophia Pearce commented on the conditions of the day, “It started out very nice. It was super hot, like it normally is at the SoCal events. Later on it got super cold though. We were freezing, and the wind was making the water more choppy. I think it was cool that we got to sail in multiple types of conditions all in one day. It was overall a really great experience.”

CdM’s top boat ended up coming in 6th place. Asher Green, a junior, skippered and Annabella Rivera, a sophomore, crewed in the boat. Congratulations Sea Kings!
