On Tuesday, September 11th in the lecture hall, CdM’s Speech and Debate team met for the first time since June! It was an informational meeting for all students interested in joining. It was great and insightful  to see how many individuals were interested in the club.

A unique part of the Debate club is that it is mixed in with grades 7-12, which gives the middle schoolers a great opportunity to expand their horizons and learn more about public speaking. The students in seventh and eighth grade are required to come to every other meeting and to an occasional lunch meeting, while the high schoolers are required to come to the meetings held on Tuesdays at 7:00pm.

The new board members did a great job of putting the meeting together and explaining the concepts of the club. “We would really like to increase student participation, because at the end of the day, students’ effort and participation is what will form them into a stronger speaker and debater”, says board member Tarah Zadeh. Being on the team is one thing, but a student trying their best is another, because the most beneficial factors truly come out of effort, cooperation and determination.

Events that will take place over the course of the year were acknowledged and the proper attire for these events was addressed as well. Being a part of this academic team is a great way to learn responsibility, independence and better speaking skills while having fun with friends and meeting new people who share similar interests.

If one missed this informational meeting, there will be another meeting next week where the students can sign up for the team if they want to partake in it for the 2018-19 school year. Here is to a new, prosperous and great school year filled with learning new things.
