On September 26th of this year, Jared Peck released his debut novel, “The Short History of the Girl Next Door.” This story blends happiness and sadness perfectly. The reader would never guess that this is Peck’s first novel.
“The Short History of the Girl Next Door” tells the story of a freshman boy, Matt Wainwright, and his unrequited love for his best friend Tabby. Matt and Tabby have been friends ever since they were little and Matt has loved her ever since seventh grade. Unfortunately for Matt, a senior, Liam Branson, likes Tabby. Matt is too afraid to admit his feelings for Tabby and might lose her because of it.
This story isn’t just a typical love story thought. It also heavily focuses on Matt’s love for basketball and his endless practicing, trying to get better. Every morning, Matt gets up early and goes outside to shoot hoops. No matter the weather, Matt is always outside doing the same routine every day. He is persistent in improving and getting on the varsity team by his sophomore year.
Matt’s family dynamic is also very fun to read. His family is very close knit. His relationship with his four year old brother is really cute to read. Tabby’s relationship with his family is also very entertaining. She is practically a part of his family and comes in unannounced most of the time. Having a close knit family is not something someone normally sees in a young adult novel and it is really interesting to see it in one.
“The Short History of the Girl Next Door” was definitely worth the read. Besides all of the more upbeat aspects of the story, the book goes into a darker state about halfway through the book. This book would get a four out of five stars. This book is right up the alley of anyone who loves John Green novels.
