Glee Never Fails To Impress

Posted on 28 November 2009 by Katherine Fox

The second episode of Glee since being back from a break proved to be one of the best yet. “Ballad” is the perfect title for the episode because every member of the Glee Club is assigned a partner and has to sing a ballad to them.
“I thought this episode was the best so far because I loved the songs and the story line,” said junior Allie Moskovits.
Honestly, what is not to love about this week’s episode? Within the first five minutes of the show Will and Rachel sing a ballad, which gives a little glance into the amazing musical numbers that occur later on in the show. This week’s episode included “Lean on Me”, “Endless Love”, “I’ll Stand By You”, “Young Girl”, “Don’t Stand So Close to Me”, “Crush”, and “[You’re] Having My Baby”. The Glee cast puts their own touch on each song they sing, evoking sadness, happiness and even laughter from the audience at any given moment.
With the comical lines, commentaries, and story this episode keeps everyone laughing. From Kurt explaining his love for Finn to Rachel trying to win over Will, the episode does its job in entertaining audiences and reminding them why they love Glee so much.

Season 1 Episode 11 “Ballad” Recap:
Will has the Glee kids pair off to learn to express their emotions through ballads. He becomes uncomfortable when Rachel draws his name and chooses the romantic “Endless Love” as their duet. As she sings, Rachel starts to realize how “super, super cute” her teacher is. Will has experience with students who fall for him, so the look on Rachel’s face is all too familiar.
When Quinn’s Chastity Ball dress is too tight, her mother Judy quickly fends it off to her quitting Cheerios.
Rachel gives Will a gold star-flecked tie to make him think of her. Will confides in Emma that this is similar to a crush by his former student, Suzy Pepper. She also gave him a tie to remember her. Yet when Will confronted Suzy, she ate a hot pepper in despair that put her into a coma. Will is now worried that Rachel will be too fragile to let down. Emma tells Will that he should sing a song to Rachel about how he feels.
Because he is always thinking about his own problems, Finn cannot perform with his partner Kurt, who harbors a secret crush on Finn. Kurt advises Finn to express his frustrations about the baby through song. That night, Finn’s mother catches him singing to a sonogram video. He confesses that Quinn is pregnant.
The next morning, Finn tells Quinn that he told his mom. Quinn gets angry that now her parents will find out.
Emma goes with Will to rehearsal with Rachel. He sings a mash-up about schoolgirl crushes on teachers, but Rachel doesn’t get the obvious meaning. Watching Will’s performance, Emma is just as smitten as Rachel. She’s becomes no help in sending Rachel the message that Will is not interested.
After the failed attempt to reach Rachel by song, Will goes home, only to find Rachel there. Teri is exploiting Rachel by letting her clean the house and cook dinner. The next day, Suzy Pepper confronts Rachel and threatens her to stay away from Will.
Puck confesses to Mercedes that he is actually the father of Quinn’s baby. Mercedes tells him to back off because Quinn obviously chose Finn over him.
At the Fabray house for dinner, Finn starts to panic about the plan Kurt made. He retreats to the bathroom and calls Kurt for moral support. Finn psyches himself up and sings his ballad “(You’re) Having My Baby” to Quinn in front of her shocked parents. Quinn accuses her mother Judy of pretending that she didn’t know. Despite Quinn’s crying pleas, her father Russell won’t forgive her and throws her out of the house. Finn brings Quinn home, and his mother allows her to stay as long as she needs to.
Suzy Pepper follows Rachel into the bathroom and warns her that she won’t find her self-esteem in Will. Will confronts Rachel about her inappropriate actions and she apologizes in tears. Will assures her that one day she will find the perfect boy for her.
At the end of the episode the Glee club surprises Quinn and Finn by singing, “Lean on Me” as a group ballad dedicated to the couple.

Glee is Back!

Posted on 15 November 2009 by Katherine Fox

After two long weeks that seemed like an eternity to many students, the one show that makes Wednesday comparable to Christmas is back: Glee. From the singing and dancing to the funny and relatable plot, Glee has made its mark on the CdM student body.

“I love Glee. I was really depressed when the show wasn’t on for two weeks but I am so happy it’s back now,” said junior Jessica Beyer.
After taking a break for a couple of weeks, Glee premiered with an amazing episode, “Wheels”. There are three stunning singing numbers that include “Defying Gravity”, “Dancing With Myself”, and “Proud Mary”. As usual, the performances captivate audiences.
Season 1 Episode 10 “Wheels” recap:
The episode starts out with Finn and Quinn worrying about the baby that is on the way. Quinn orders Finn to get a job to pay for the doctor’s bills that her parents cannot know anything about. At this point, the audience knows that Quinn’s baby’s dad is actually Puck, Finn’s best friend. Puck loves Quinn and wants to help her pay the bills but she refuses to let him help her.
The Glee Club also needs money for a bus that can transport Artie in his wheelchair to Sectionals. Will suggests the idea of having a bake sale to raise money but nobody in Glee wants to participate. Artie feels like nobody cares about him or how he feels. As a consequence for their actions, Will has the kids ride in wheelchairs for the week so they will know what it feels like to live in Artie’s chair.
Rachel, one of the lead singers in the club is assigned the female lead for the musical number “Defying Gravity”. Kurt asks to audition for the part but Will turns him down. Kurt tells his father about this incident which causes his dad to meet with Principal Figgins and Will. Kurt’s dad makes them give Kurt an audition. Will tells the kids that Kurt and Rachel will compete with each other for the lead part and the Glee kids will vote.
Figgins becomes inspired by Will’s wheelchair experiment and makes Sue, the uptight cheerleader coach hold open auditions for the Cheerios. A Down Syndrome student named Becky tries out and contrary to what audiences think Sue would do, she lets her on the team.
Since the once popular Puck, Quinn, and Finn are all losers now for being in Glee, the attempted bake sale fails. In order to raise money Puck buys marijuana and bakes it into the cupcakes, making them an instant success, and addictive.
Rachel wins the face off with Kurt and receives the lead in “Defying Gravity”. Puck steals the money from the bake sale to give to Quinn. She refuses but is touched. Finn then announces that he got a job.
With all the money earned to pay for the new bus, Artie will be able to drive with the team to Sectionals. Artie suggests that they use the money for a ramp in the auditorium. However, Figgins tells Will that Sue gave him a check to pay for the ramp, so they can still get the bus. Will is confused by Sue’s generosity. During this time, Sue goes to visit her sister who is mentally handicapped and in a home. Sue has a whole different demeanor and is sweet and kind to her sister.

Glee is on Fox every Wednesday at nine. Tune in to see what happens this week!
