Disaster Preparedness Expo

Posted on 15 September 2009 by Paul Zubatov

As I approached the library for the second time this month to take my weekly SAT, I noticed something new, something different and upbeat, apart from the typical modern drab of the Newport Beach Public Library.

The 1st annual Disaster Preparedness Expo hosted by the Newport Beach Fire Department began.

Unfortunately, I do not affiliate myself with many library programs and events.  However, as I took my break from my SAT practice test, I found myself descending the stairs from the teen center, and entering the terrace.  To my surprise, balloons and banners of a very vibrant pink replaced the usual turquoise and beige of the library.

The enticingly pink exposition was open to all residents of Newport Beach.  Although many of us here clearly do not fear any major disasters, I passed a handful of passerby who seemed just as curious as I was.

Disaster supply kits abounded.  Not only could you learn how to assemble one, many vendors sat waiting for those apathetic enough for the chore to be done for them.

Basic first aid, and even radio communication skills, are just two of the activities that people could acquaint themselves with.

In the event of a disaster, how many of you can say that your family is truly organized and prepared?  What about your neighborhood?  Unlikely many of you, but for the people that did turn up at the library on a pleasant Saturday morning, we are prepared.
