Back For Another Year of Dress Codes

Posted on 15 September 2009 by Michelle Kim

After an amazing summer of strapless dresses, boy tank-tops, really short shorts, and walking barefoot in the sand, we all know that we have to come back to school wearing something a little more conservative.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s dress code has a fairly reasonable conduct to most, yet still there are so many dress codes each year. A few of the most broken dress code rules are: wearing too short of shorts, wearing spaghetti straps, and guys wearing tank tops.  The punishments for wearing the garments are: 1. Warning; loaner clothes, 2. Administrative discretion, 3. Saturday school, and 4. Conference with parents and possible suspension.

You would think that with all of these penalties that people would learn from their mistakes and not wear inappropriate clothing again, but that is not necessarily the case for some students. 8th grader Morgan Turner said, “I got dress coded three times last year for wearing too short of shorts. Even so, I still wear my short shorts because they’re super cute. I guess I just never learned my lesson.”

“I got dress coded twice last year from wearing spaghetti straps. Almost three times, but I saved myself by wearing a jacket for the rest of the day,” replies 9th grader Maddy Gaylord after being questioned of her past dress codes.

As you can see, with high school students, sometimes wearing our cutest spaghetti straps and mini shorts can be worth the risk of getting into trouble.
