The Aftermath

Posted on 25 September 2009 by Erik Ctvrtlik

Like warriors after a battle, the students at CdM came for zero period, tired after a long night of football. The mood was as not festive or joyful as it would be after a victory. Despite the players’ high hopes and expectations going into the game, most of the CdM students began to finally register the hard truth: they would have to wait another year to get the bell back.

“I thought they would win,” said junior Justin Tucker, “but I was really disappointed in the second half.”

This was the prevailing mood throughout campus. Many students were shocked at the ineffective attack of the Sea Kings, who only scored seven points with twenty seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“They shouldn’t have lost by that much,” said freshman football player James Christian.

Though there has been a wide margin in the past, the outcome could simply be an off game in a potentially successful season, and returning juniors next year could defeat the Sailors in 2010.

“CdM had a good chance,” said freshman Dakota Armstrong, “but their passing was off, and they didn’t hit the holes.”

In spite of a tough loss for the Sea Kings, the turnout was fantastic, and the event seemed like a lot of fun. The high intensity, typical of the Battle of the Bay, was there in full force.

Sophomore Jake Maxwell sums up the game:

“CdM played perfectly. Harbor just played more perfectly.”

Moments Leading Up To The Big Game

Posted on 24 September 2009 by Donna Etemadi

Students buzzing with anticipation, awaiting the final confrontation between the two rivals. Long lines to buy tickets a week in advance. Designing T-shirts symbolizing each student’s school spirit and confidence in the Sea King Pride.

The forty-eigth annual Battle of the Bay football game stirs the competitiveness between Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor while also allows heightened spirit to spread throughout the school.

From teachers assigning minimum homework on the night of the game to football players having longer practices, Battle of the Bay is a tradition that is embedded in the culture of our school and is therefore, an event that can be recognized as a union of students, faculty members, parents, and community members who enjoy a sports game between rival schools.

“Seniors are definitely excited because it’s their last time to participate in Battle of the Bay,” stated senior Madeline Mains.

Students in general are excited for the annual rivalry game. If anyone need proof of this, he or she could just glance at the ticket lines the week of the game.

Student buzz surrounding Battle of the Bay has been phenomenal. Daily announcements, posters, newspaper articles documenting the event, teachers promoting attendance, the hype regarding Battle of the Bay models increased school spirit, school unity, and school pride.

On Thursday, September 24, the day of the game, the Battle of the Bay rally brings together freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to demonstrate school spirit and support our hardworking football players.

The rally was kicked off by Chloe Harder, Benny Townsend, and Parker Seaman, clearly displaying their CdM school spirit. A video illustrating CdM’s confidence in beating Newport Harbor was shown while our football team performed a rap to the student body.

CdM’s new principal, Tim Bryan, made a debut in playing a game with Mr. Selby and later giving words of confidence and wisdom to the students.

The Battle of the Bay rally was a monumental display of school and spirit and pride in what CdM can accomplish as a school and a unified student body.

The excitement displayed around school this week and at the rally indicate increased levels of Sea King Pride and confidence in our students.

CdM’s Varsity Football Kicks Off a Great New Season

Posted on 23 September 2009 by Melissa LaBruna

21-IMG_0537“CdM’s going to dominate, obviously,” predicted sophomore Remy Lamons before Friday’s game against Troy High School; and he was right. CdM started strong and held their lead until the end, finishing with a win of 27-14.

Near the end of the fourth quarter, quarterback Kyle Smith of Troy went down with leg cramps after a series of passes and didn’t come back due to a minute left in play.

With three minutes and 49 seconds left of the first quarter, Michael Borchard passed to a teammate, but Deangelo Bonner of Troy intercepted it. However, in the next play, Troy’s running back Justin Austin fumbles the ball, and CdM regained possession.

The most memorable play of the game was lead by Michael Borchard, CdM’s renowned quarterback, during the beginning of the second quarter. He rushed 80 yards and claimed the second touchdown of the night. After the field goal CdM’s lead held strong; it was 14-0.

“I had to make the read on the play and I was just trying to run my hardest,” says Borchard when asked what he was thinking as he sprinted down the field.

It was third and goal, with less then one yard remaining, Michael Borchard rushes for touchdown, 20-0. The field goal was blocked.

Third quarter, first and ten, 44-yard pass from Borchard to Donald Dalton. With a good field goal, the score became 27-7.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter CdM had the ball on the 29 yard line, Smith passed to Kevin Tucker but it was intercepted, touchdown by Troy. With another good field goal the game ended with a score of 27-14.

CdM Junior Varsity Silence Segerstrom

Posted on 16 September 2009 by Dan Steele

CdM started slow without scoring a touchdown for the entire first quarter, when it seemed it would be an easy game for them. “We came out expecting a win to be handed over to us on a silver platter, and we got surprised when we got scored on,” said Junior captain Preston Risser. Although Segerstrom high came out and quickly scored a touchdown, CdM fought back in the last three quarters of the game to win 42-7.

In the first quarter, CdM started with the ball. In a quick one-two-three series for the offense, the ball was punted to Segerstrom. Both sides were shut down until Segerstrom broke free with a 40 yard run by their tailback. This would be the last time Segerstrom would score. “The defense really picked it up after letting them score a touchdown,” said Junior Braden Granard. In the beginning of the second quarter, CdM’s running back Eric Fisher put six up on the board for CdM by running the football 35 yards. Along with another touchdown by Fisher, Kevin Kitzens and Josh Giger would also score to make the score 21-7.

After the break at halftime, CdM came out relentless and scored another 21 points, some with the help of the defense. A punt was blocked on the 15 yard line by Jack Kanen who was quickly tackled when he tried to run it in for a touchdown. It took the offense one play to score, with a run by Kevin Kitzens. All of the smack talk that the Segerstrom players had been talking at the beginning of the game was quickly coming to an end as they realized the game was out of reach for them.

As well as getting the win, the team was also to welcome a new player to team, senior Steven Sheldon. Steven is a transfer from Mater Dei who has just been granted the rights to play on the Varsity squad. This was a warm up game for Sheldon, who had a big hit on the Segerstrom quaterback. “It felt really good to get back out there and be able to hit other guys that aren’t on your own team,” said Sheldon.
