CdM Students Accomplish Amazing Feat

Posted on 08 February 2010 by Donna Etemadi

Two CdM students, sophomore Sara Hosteller and sophomore AJ Santamaria, have raised a staggering amount of over $3800 in support of the earthquake relief in Haiti. Through their generosity and dedication, these individuals have raised an astonishing sum of money to assuage the suffering that hundreds of thousands of Haitians are enduring.

Santamaria and Hosteller accomplished this by conducting a money drive at Corona del Mar and Harbor View Elementary School, hosting a TK Burgers fundraiser, and recycling.

When asked what inspired him to take on this ambitious task, Santamaria stated, “I was brushing my teeth and could hear the news in the other room. When I heard what happened in Haiti, I wanted to do something. That is when I approached ASB.”

These two individuals worked together to make their venture a success. Hosteller focused on the money drive at Harbor View and Santamaria went “dumpster diving” to find recyclable material. The TK Burgers fundraiser was held on Monday, February 1 at lunch. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers were given to students at the cook-out.

Hosteller was glad that the fundraiser “raised awareness and rallied CdM students together”. In fact, not only did the fundraiser rally CdM students together, but it also rallied Harbor View students together. According to Hosteller, Mrs. Botta’s 4th and 5th grade class raised a grand total of $800!

The $3800 that these philanthropists raised is to be donated to the American Red Cross in support of the Haitian relief effort. The hard work and commitment of these individuals will help to assuage the suffering of hundreds of thousands of Haitians.

The American Red Cross will be presented with a donation of more than $3800 for the Haiti earthquake aid. Our wonderful CdM students are due immense distinction for the dedication and humanity they have shown.

When asked how he felt about this accomplishment, sophomore AJ Santamaria stated, “I’m not concerned about how I feel. The earthquake in Haiti was a wake up call and I’m glad that we could step out of our Newport Beach bubble and show compassion toward the people of Haiti.”
