Philosophy Club

Posted on 23 January 2010 by Jenna Shapiro

What do you think about President Obama’s healthcare plan? Do you think mental hospitals are necessary or inhumane? These are just a few controversial questions that members of CdM’s Philosophy Club discussed during their most recent meeting on Wednesday, January 20. Philosophy Club provides a comfortable atmosphere that is open to you and your opinion. All points of view are not only accepted, but encouraged.

Along with Obama’s healthcare plan and mental hospitals, this week’s debates at Philosophy Club included donations to Haiti and other publicized areas rather than the needy people in unpublicized areas; if the movie Avatar’s suicidal effects were too drastic of people who compared greedy America to the movie’s all-loving land of Pandora; and if the movie The Blind Side focused too much on the white person helping the African American person, rather than the African American’s personal story. Each week, Philosophy Club discusses different topics, but club leader Yugina Yun makes sure they are always engagingly controversial and significant to the world of today.

Freshman attendee Mason Lyle said, “I found that conversations I have with my friends outside of Philosophy Club can be a bit mundane and irrelevant. Philosophy Club provides an avenue of expression where I can share my opinion and hear others’ opinions on matters relevant to society.”

Listen to the daily announcements for the date of the next Philosophy Club meeting and come to engage in an enlightening discussion.
