Christian? Athlete? Neither? Join FCA

Posted on 28 January 2010 by Michelle Kim

FCA, or Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is a fun and spiritual club where the main focuses are that sports and Christianity go a long way throughout a teenager’s high school experience. Partakers in this club don’t have to be Christian or an athlete, so anyone and everyone is welcome. This club is advised by Marina Mayer and is led by a group of student leaders from all different grade levels that meet up a week in advance and plan the huddles.

“I used to be ashamed of being known as the Christian girl at school. After I joined this club I realized how many other Christians there were at this school and I soon became very proud of my religion. I was even more impressed by all of the students who attended the huddles that weren’t Christian at all,” said freshman Michelle Kmeto.

These huddles are started off with a little music, free pizza, and a game. This week’s game was called the Lifesaver Relay. Two teams, boys vs. girls, were made and the rule of the game was to try to pass down as many Lifesaver candies as possible to your teammates by only using straws that you held in your mouth. The teams consisted of  freshman boys Dakota Armstrong, Kai Wilson, and Tim Reinhardt, and the freshman girls Annie Alvarado, Keaton Bassler, and Maddie O’ Connor.

“The game was fun but the lifesavers kept slipping off my straw and falling. We lost, majorly,” said freshman Kai Wilson.

The game was followed by a speaker named Bryan Price who talked about a childhood trip to Yosemite with his family. The story related to a story in the Bible in Luke 19 v1-10 of the tax collector named Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was one of the most despised men of the town but he had a strong heart for the Lord. His desire to understand and see Jesus more clearly caused him to climb up a Sycamore tree. The Lord Jesus knew what was in his heart so He blessed him and invited him over for dinner. The message of this story was that Zacchaeus was in the desperation of something better and real, which is something that many people want in this life, especially high school students.

“One big reason why I chose this story is because i feel that we all have these areas in our life where we are desperate for something different and real. That the life we are leading is not only confusing but also feels fake in many ways…Zacchaeus is a similar guy. He’s desperate. He’s tired of faking his way through life. He wants change…and he encounters God in a way that changes it all for him. He’s not overcome with guilt but with love…he realizes that God has called him by name, not to be angry with him, but to BE WITH HIM. That’s one of the great misunderstandings of God – that he’s far away, or doesn’t care…truth is that he’s with us, wanting us to see Him and experience his love,” said high school pastor of Mariners Church, Bryan Price.

In conclusion, this week’s huddle turned out to be a success with about one hundred students that attended. The speaker was loved by the audience, the game was fun, and the pizza was delicious. So if you like listening to sermons, playing games, and eating free pizza, then come to the FCA meetings every other Thursday in Mr. Freeman’s room, Rm # 210.
