For the first time since 1993 the top two seeds in all of the NFL meet in the superbowl. Last time, it was the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills playing at the Rose Bowl in Pasedina, California. Now it is the Indianapolis Colts, a team who has been to the Superbowl only three times in franchise history, and the New Orleans Saints, a team who has never been to the Superbowl.
It was an amazing road for both these teams who went undefeated throughout most of the regular season. Peyton Manning and his Colts went 14-0 before losing their first game, while Drew Brees and the Saints went 13-0 before losing.
Brees told Yahoo! news, “We’ve used the strength and resiliency of our fans to go out and play every Sunday and play with the confidence that we can do it, that we can achieve everything we’ve set out to achieve.”
Both teams have come a long way from their last season. The Colts, being one of the better teams in the NFL since the arrival of their star quarterback Payton Manning, lost in the wildcard round of the playoffs to the San Diego Chargers. The Saints didn’t even make it to the playoffs. In fact, they were last place in the NFC South with a record of 8-8.
So who will win? It is a tough call, and not one this journalist is about to make. But lets take in acount the pros and cons of both teams to guess on how this game will turn out.
The Quarterbacks: Well there is no contest when in comes to these two; they are the best in the NFL. Manning had the highest passer rating amongst all quarterbacks in the league in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Thats three years in a row of domination. He appeared in the top five among quarterbacks for the last 7 years, but this is the first year in a while where Manning did not appear in the top five, but instead earned sixth.
Drew Brees is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league, but he never lets his size effect how he plays. Brees is the top rated quarterback this season, and has been in the top five three years prior to this. He, like Manning, is considered one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. While his team has not always been successful, one thing for sure is that he doesn’t quit.
The Runningbacks: Indianapolis has depended on Joseph Addai for four seasons. He is fast, strong, and at the mere age of 26, has a lot of years to continue his domination. With the nick name “Do or Dai” it is easy to see why he has had successful years with the Colts.
As for New Orleans, two runningbacks share a spot on the roster. Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush are two extremely talented runningbacks. Thomas, who had his breakthrough season in 2007, avergaes 5.1 yards a carry. He had six touchdowns this season, four less then the Colts’ Addai, and averages 8.5 yards per reception. Bush, on the other hand, is known here in Southern California for the speed and victories he contributed to the beloved University of Southern California. However, when drafted into the NFL, his days of front flips into the end zone came to a hault. This season however, the Reggie of old has returned with a perpose.
The Defense: Both teams’ defenses are not that special. While they have a dominating offense led by two star quarterbacks, their defense lacks. The Colts are ranked 18th in the league for total defense, 14th for passing defense, and 24th in rushing defense.
The Saints also lack that defensive toughness. With the 25th ranked total defense, the 26th ranked passing defense, and the 21st ranked rushing defense, New Orleans clearly has some work to do.
Still undecided on who will win? So is the rest of America. Since these two teams haven’t battled yet this season, it is hard to tell which team truely is better than the other. One obvious fact, February 7th will cause nail biting, yelling, cheering, and crying, no matter who comes out victorious.
