Being the new kid has never been an easy task. Attending a new school, learning a new campus, dealing with new teachers, and facing new classmates are all aspects of being a new student. However, last Thursday the New Student Luncheon hosted by Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL) brought together all of the new students who where in the same, and sometimes uncomfortable, position.
“We want kids to feel confident with themselves and meet new people that are in the same boat,” said PAL Sofie Yarberry. Students ranging from grades 8 to 12 filed into the gym during lunch and finally found a sense of comfort. The lunch allowed these students to understand that they are not the only ones that are dealing with big changes.
As students ate their lunch, they began to mingle with each other and share their excitement for the school year. Senior Steven Sheldon is eager for the football games while freshman Sally Evans is excited for all of the fun-filled dances.
“I can’t wait to get involved in all of the programs CDM has to offer, like Youth and Government, ASB, and PAL. I hope to become a part of all of these,” said freshman Shea O Hill.
As lunch came to an end, it was clear that the overall goal of the luncheon had been accomplished.
“I don’t feel at all like ‘the new kid.’ I realize now that there are many other people feeling the same things and undergoing the same experiences,” said freshman Meredith Davin. The new students entered the gym uneasy and uncomfortable, but left with a new confidence and excitement for the school year.
